Colon cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the large intestine, also known as the colon. It is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, with an estimated 147,950 new cases and 53,200 deaths in 2020.

The colon is a long, muscular tube that is about 5 feet long. It is responsible for absorbing water and nutrients from food and storing waste products until they are eliminated.

Colon cancer can occur anywhere in the colon, but it is most common in the rectum and sigmoid colon.

Symptoms of Colon Cancer

The symptoms of colon cancer can vary depending on the size and location of the tumor. In the early stages, colon cancer may not cause any symptoms. As the tumor grows, it can cause a variety of symptoms, including:

* Abdominal pain or cramping * Changes in bowel habits, such as diarrhea, constipation, or narrowing of the stools * Blood in the stool * Weight loss * Fatigue * Nausea and vomiting

Diagnosis of Colon Cancer

Colon cancer is diagnosed with a colonoscopy, which is a procedure in which a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end is inserted into the colon. The colonoscopy allows the doctor to visualize the colon and look for any abnormalities.

If the colonoscopy reveals a suspicious area, the doctor may perform a biopsy, which is a procedure in which a small sample of tissue is removed and examined under a microscope.

Treatment of Colon Cancer

The treatment of colon cancer depends on the stage of the cancer, as well as the patient's overall health.

Surgery is the primary treatment for colon cancer. The type of surgery will depend on the size and location of the tumor. In some cases, the entire colon may need to be removed.

Radiation therapy and chemotherapy may be used before or after surgery to kill cancer cells and reduce the risk of the cancer coming back.

Targeted therapy is a type of treatment that uses drugs to target specific molecules that are involved in the growth and spread of cancer cells. Targeted therapy may be used in combination with surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy.

Immunotherapy is a type of treatment that uses the body's own immune system to fight cancer. Immunotherapy may be used in combination with other treatments to improve the chances of a cure.

Prevention of Colon Cancer

There are a number of things you can do to reduce your risk of developing colon cancer, including:

* Eating a healthy diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains * Maintaining a healthy weight * Getting regular exercise * Quitting smoking * Limiting alcohol intake * Getting screened for colon cancer regularly

Support for Colon Cancer Patients

If you have been diagnosed with colon cancer, there are a number of resources available to help you cope with the disease and its treatment.

* The American Cancer Society provides information and support to cancer patients and their families. * The National Cancer Institute provides research and information on cancer, including colon cancer. * The Colon Cancer Alliance provides support and resources to colon cancer patients and their families.

Colon cancer is a serious disease, but it is treatable if it is caught early. By understanding the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options for colon cancer, you can take steps to reduce your risk of developing the disease and improve your chances of a cure.
